In the spirit of Ramadan, a time of reflection and generosity, Himmah, a social justice charity based in Nottingham, urges the community to come together and support their poverty appeal. While many Muslims choose to fast during this holy month, there are others in our city who face hunger not by choice, but by circumstance.
Established in 2010 by Sajid Mohammed, Himmah became a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in 2015. Inspired by the encounter with a destitute asylum seeker named Ahmed, Sajid initiated discussions on how to address destitution in Nottingham. This led to the birth of Himmah, dedicated to supporting vulnerable individuals and families in the community.
Over the years, Himmah has been instrumental in providing essential services such as food parcels, hot meals, and advice & advocacy to those in need. Their projects, including foodbanks and social supermarkets like Foodprint, have been lifelines for many facing food poverty. Collaborations with other faith groups, notably SaSH, have enabled the provision of hot meals every Wednesday evening.
In addition to addressing immediate needs, Himmah is committed to tackling broader issues such as racial and educational inequalities through community organizing and advocacy efforts. However, much of their work depends on the generosity of donors, both individuals, and businesses, who contribute to appeals like this one.
The current Crowdfunding Appeal offers an opportunity for everyone to contribute. Donations up to £250 made online will be matched, effectively doubling the impact. As the charity's reliance on grants and donations intensifies, particularly amidst rising food costs, every contribution matters.
Ramadan holds special significance for Himmah, aligning with their mission rooted in Islamic principles. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of caring for one's neighbors and those in need, reflecting the values guiding Himmah's work.
Last year alone, Himmah distributed over 16,000 food parcels to local families in need. However, with demand soaring and food prices escalating, the challenge persists. Just £15 can provide food for one person for a week, highlighting the profound impact even small donations can make.
Beyond immediate aid, Himmah offers wrap-around support, including access to social supermarkets, budgeting classes, and cooking workshops. These initiatives empower individuals to manage their finances effectively and make nutritious meals from limited resources.
To support Himmah's efforts and make a tangible difference in the lives of those experiencing food poverty, please donate generously. Every pound donated helps ensure that no one in Nottingham goes hungry.
